ATVs are all-terrain vehicles commonly known as ATVs. They are used throughout the country for both work and pleasure. ATVs are used by farmers and farm workers to track livestock, grazing areas, inspect, maintain, and check the crops and haul supplies. ATVs are also used by many people for recreation in their family farms, off-road, mountainous, and in rural or coastal terrain.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which keeps statistics on ATV-related injuries, has recorded a total number of 14,129 ATV-related deaths between 1982 and 2015. The CPSC estimates that almost 98,000 people were treated in emergency rooms for ATV-related injuries in 2015.

Traumatic Brain Injury

TBI, permanent concussions (TBI), neurologic injuries, spinal chord injuries, neck injuries and fractures, as well as chest and abdominal injuries are some of the most serious and non-fatal ATV injuries. TBI is when an ATV rider’s head hits the ground during an accident, rollover, or crash. Sometimes, the victim of the crash may not appear to be hurt.

Non-fatal ATV accidents may result in life-altering medical complications for those who are injured. ATV injuries are often expensive and require extensive treatment. For spinal cord and head injuries, rehabilitation and physical therapy are often required.

ATV Dangers

ATV rolling or flipping is the most common injury. ATV drivers and passengers can get thrown out of the vehicle or even pinched down by it. People don’t realize that ATVs are not intended to carry passengers in their backs. This can increase the risk of an accident for both the passenger and the operator. U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration states that ATVs are not designed to be driven on regular paved roads and lack the stability of other vehicles.

Children are more at risk of injury than adults because they lack the cognitive abilities, physical strength, and fine motor skills necessary to properly operate ATVs. Research has shown that teens and adolescent ATV riders are more likely to sustain head injuries and suffer more severe injuries than other age groups. Despite the existence of codes and standards that apply to all terrain vehicles and state laws, serious ATV injuries and deaths still happen.

ATV Injuries: Long-term Care and Medical Treatment

ATV injuries are often very serious and costly. They can also require extensive rehabilitation and life-altering therapies. A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which examined ATV injuries in Alaska, concluded that six Alaskans might be permanently disabled from ATV accidents. This is assuming that each victim of an ATV accident died before 65 years.

Many victims of life-altering ATV injuries can suffer severe mental and emotional trauma. TBI victims will need to be treated for their injuries over a lifetime. This includes extensive rehabilitation, as well as expensive assistive technologies.

Safety Tips

  • These safety tips will help you reduce the risk of getting hurt.
  • When driving an ATV, ensure you have a helmet and appropriate footwear.
  • You should not permit ATV drivers to transport passengers.
  • All ATV drivers should read and comprehend the operating manual. This includes any restrictions and limitations that may apply to the ATV or the terrain in which it will be used.
  • You can find the relevant state and local regulations for ATV use.
  • Safety training is essential for all ATV riders and drivers. ATV riding experience is also important.
  • Never let young children drive an ATV.
  • Do not drive an ATV if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

You should always have at least one working communication device in your vehicle when you ride or drive an ATV. This will allow you to call emergency help in an emergency.

Have your ATV injury case evaluated

ATV sellers and manufacturers must adhere to certain federal and state laws regarding safety. First, seek medical attention if you or someone you love has suffered from ATV-related injuries. An experienced attorney may be able to evaluate your case. Your injury may result in you being entitled to damages and expenses.
